Why are keywords important?
Keywords are the words you want to rank well for. Keywords are what we type in when we are searching for products, services, and answers on the search engines. Companies optimize their website pages for search by assigning keywords to each one of them. The ways for a business to pick the right keywords are huge. Keyword selection is fundamental to success when it comes to executing a paid search or PPC campaign. It is also integral to a website natural or organic ranking on the search engines.
Keywords are 2- to 4-word phrases that accurately describe what you offer using a language that searchers are likely to type in, and which aren't so competitive that you have no chance of getting on the front page. If your keywords are too general then they'll probably have thousands of results being too competitive for you to be able to rank of the front page. But, on the other hand, if your keywords are too specific then few people will research those words and you wont be able to get the reach you were expecting.
Considering the above, follow the next tips for selecting great keywords/phrases to turn them into profitable income and rank high on search engines results.
1. Avoid using too general words
Avoid using single-word terms because they are very competitive and broad. Two and three word phrases are easier to rank for, but also, they send you much higher quality traffic. One-word searches aren't very useful for getting the results we want. When deciding which keywords will be useful, it is important to put yourself into the user’s mind to understand what words they would type to search for your business.
2. Avoid words that are too specific
The more specific the search is, the less the competition for the search keyword. And the less the competition, the easier it is to rank well on that term. But, The more specific the search, the fewer people actually search for that keyword. Words must be specific, but terms that are TOO specific are useless because nobody searches for them. Make your content relevant.
3. Avoid popular words
Again, this is mainly because your chance of being #1 on a search that has 300 pages is really low. So there are many resources you can use to see how popular are those keywords like Google AdWords consultant (FREE) or many other that require monthly/annual payment. When looking at Google Adwords you want to pay attention to those keywords that have around 1000 searches per month instead of the ones that have 10.000 or more, with a low competition. This way you have a greater probability of reaching the front page on search engines.
4. Avoid high competitive
By this stage you might have found the keywords that are both popular and highly relevant to what your business offer. The next step is to check if there are many other sites competing for that same keyword. This is important because if there many competitors you might not be able to rank well for it, or you might rank lower than you'd like.
To success on selecting keywords is finding search words that are highly relevant to what you offer, popular enough that they’ll result in decent amount of traffic to your site, but not so competitive that you can't rank in the front page.
